Evaluation of Just Another Boyband
For this task we were asked to concentrate on continuity. This scared me as my feedback on previous videos said that's what I needed to work on. I was slightly reassured when I stared to look into some famous continuity errors in well known films.
We also had to try not to break the 180 degree rule and to include an accurate action match.
Strengths of Video
- The music that goes with the opening of my video was Riot Van by Arctic Monkeys. This song went well with the start of my video as it replicates the image of a group of boys who like to mess about. Also the name of the band in my video was 'Aztec Funkeys' and that name was inspired by 'Arctic Monkeys'.
- The opening scene shows the boyband standing around waiting to enter the board room. This is a recognisable feature taken from the audition stage of the X-Factor so I thought it was import to include in my video.
- 0:30 - Here I attempted an action match which seemed to work quite well.
- 0:36 - Continuity works between shots here.
- Niall's 'amazing' Irish accent.
- 1:34 - The shot/ reverse shot works reasonably well here.
- 1:41 - I think that the cut between medium shot and close up works well here to show the reactions of the band changing.
- 3:19 - The 2-shot of the judges is effective.
- 3:35 - Close up shows the reaction of the character well.
- 3:37 - The over the shoulder shot works well here.
- 3:43 - Again the close up here is really effective.
- 4:24 - The end credit show the next act entering the room this adds to the realism of the video.
Weaknesses of Video
- 0:18 - The 180 degree rule is broken here which is a negative element to the video.
- 0:28 - The camera becomes a little bit shaky here, also the auto focus zooms in and out
- 0:29 - There's a slight continuity error here, where the characters are looking
- 0:57 - There is a weird edit here as it was extremely difficult to get it right because the footage we had was different in each clip.
- 0:59 - The characters appear to be entering a cupboard this was because we started filming in Fibonacci at the start of the week and at the end there was an exhibition on in that room so we could not continue to film in there so we had to do the best we could to finish the video.
- 2:02 - The camera does not pick up the dialogue well
- 2:47 - obviously, there's an issue here with the editing of the song. Next time I think the best way of shooting this might have been to use multi-camera (ideally a two/ three camera setup with one master shot and one/ two mobile cameras shooting CU/ 2 shots) editing in judges' reactions
- 2:54 - Here you can hear the lens cap bashing off the tripod
- 4:05 - Some shots are held longer than necessary.
